History of Lumberton/Purvis
While the school has a Lumberton address, it is much closer to Purvis, MS. Both towns are located in Lamar County. One of the most note able events of this area's past are the tornadoes of 1908. On April 24, 1908 most of the town of Purvis, MS was leveled to the ground, with only seven houses remaining intact. Other news of this area include "Project Dribble." The purpose of Project Dribble's was to give US Scientists experience in detecting underground nuclear tests in the Soviet Union.

Hurricane Katrina - Gulfport's Story
Although nearly three years have passed since Hurricane Katrina, there are still many blue tarps covering the roofs of homes throughout the Lumberton and Purvis area. Much damage was done. This area was also used as a recovery stage immediately after the storm. Travel trailers were staged in Purvis, MS, which were used by FEMA for temporary housing. Several organizations came to these towns after the storm and worked together to provide food and supplies for all those affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Even Bass Memorial Academy (the school we will call home during camp) suffered extensive damage. The music building lost its roof, along with the chapel, the new computer lab, the boys' dorm, and the cafeteria. The gym also lost its roof and one of the walls collapsed. The church lost part of the roof and was flooded from the rain.
