| Monroe, North Carolina | Monroe is a city prepared for the future while preserving the best of its past. Monroe retains the charm and friendliness of a southern county seat with its lovely courthouse and historic downtown. Union county was formed, by an 1842 act of the NC General Assembly, it was determined that a county seat would be located within two miles of the center of the county, and would be named in honor of President James Monroe. The town of Monroe was incorporated on December 24, 1844. Monroe is in Union County, NC, and here some statistics about the county... Union County is one of 100 counties in North Carolina. It has 637 sq. miles in land area and a population density of 194.0 per square mile. In the last three decades of the 1900s its population grew by 126.0%. On the 2000 census form, 99.0% reported only one race, with 12.5% of these reporting African-American. The population of this county is 6.2% Hispanic (of any race). The average household size is 2.81 persons compared to an average family size of 3.15 persons. In 2000, the greatest proportion of jobs was in manufacturing, with an
average wage per job of $32,612, an increase of 20.3% since 1995 (adjusted
for inflation). Per capita income grew by 9.1% between 1990 and 2000 (adjusted
for inflation).
