History of Eleanor:
Located just 27 miles northwest of Charleston, West Virginia, Eleanor was established in 1934 after a visit from President Franklin Roosevelt and the First Lady. Originally called Red House Farms, Eleanor was one of three Homesteads built and 150 families were selected to live in the Homestead. By 1946, the Washington Homesteads Association was founded and homesteaders were given the opportunity to purchase the homes. By 1947, all of the homes were owned by the occupying families. Occupations of the homestead consisted of farming and dairy, a canning plant, workshops, or the greenhouse.
Eleanor is located in Putnam County, which is one of the most productive agricultural regions in West Virginia. The area has undergone a period of rapid suburbanization due to the proximity to Huntington and Charleston, West Virginia’s two largest cities.
