History of Ontario:Welcome
Located just 85 miles east of Buffalo, New York, Ontario all started with a log cabin on the lake shore built by Freeman Hopkins, a Quaker from New England. In 1808, two years later, the town changed from Freetown to Ontario. The land and climate were ideal for farming, but industries such as saw mills, charcoal, and brickmaking took immediate precedence, only to give way to farming in the 1850s. Iron also played a large role in the development of Ontario until the early 1900s.
Today, the town of Ontario is one of the three fastest growing communities in Wayne County. Ontario provides access to Rochester’s hospitals, shopping centers, and other businesses. It is the home of Ginna Nuclear Power Station and two industrial parks. Agriculture is still a major industry in Ontario, and Wayne County is the nation’s third largest producer of apples and fruits.County Seal
Ontario is still proud of its rural heritage. Older homes become harder and harder for aging homeowners to maintain. Homes in the New York can often be over 100 years old! Though the city continues to grow, the unemployment rate is the highest it’s been in ten years.

Fun Facts About Ontario:
Ontario is home to twelve beautiful cobblestone houses. This type of cobblestone architecture is unique to western New York!
Iron ore was hauled by horse and wagon away from Ontario for years, which eventually turned the road red. Neighboring villagers could identify a person from Ontario by his red boots, wheels, and even his mustache!
Lake Ontario is the 14th largest lake in the world, but is the smallest of the Great Lakes in surface area!
